This realization inspired Gabriel Gauthier to seek out a more sustainable, healthier, and smarter alternative.
His mission to make a meaningful difference led him to hempcrete. This material—both ancient and revolutionary—transformed his vision of building and allowed him to create living spaces with authentic, unapologetic beauty.
In 1995, Gabriel discovered the extraordinary agro-economic potential of hemp and the possibility of building with the renowned hempcrete. Fascinated by its promise, he embarked on a journey of learning and mastery—spending three years in France and Switzerland studying ancestral techniques and refining them with modern innovations.

Thirty years later, thanks to Artcan’s many achievements, Gabriel is recognized as the pioneer of hemp construction in North America and an international reference (ref: Building with Hemp by Steve Allin).
Throughout his journey, he also encountered the many barriers to hemp adoption: lack of training, implementation complexity, and absence of suitable infrastructure. For every challenge, he found a solution. Optimizing mixes, refining techniques, building efficient processes, and developing site and prefab technologies.
Naturally, such a strong vision attracts remarkable talent. Artcan is more than a company, it’s a collective of passionate individuals, artisans, architects, engineers, and builders who share that vision.
