While some are still at the research stage, the interest they generate is undeniable.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cWood is the ultimate bio-based material in Quebec\u2014it accounts for more than 90% of this type of material used in construction,\u201d says Pierre Blanchet, professor in the Department of Wood and Forest Sciences at Universit\u00e9 Laval and chairholder of the Industrial Research Chair on Eco-Responsible Wood Construction (CIRCERB).\n\nLet\u2019s clarify right away: when we talk about \u201cbio-based materials,\u201d we mean materials that come from living organisms, either in whole or in part, of plant or animal origin.\n\n\u201cThe trend largely comes from architects, mainly for large, non-residential projects. The integration of bio-based materials began with LEED certification, which encouraged greater use of wood and wood composites in building envelopes,\u201d explains Mr. Blanchet. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of industrial development and research happening around insulation,\u201d he adds.\n\nThe appeal of bio-based materials lies in their smaller ecological footprint compared to petroleum-based ones. \u201cEnvironmental impact always depends on what you\u2019re comparing it to. But life-cycle analysis of materials shows a clear advantage over fossil-based materials, since extracting petroleum resources demands a lot of energy,\u201d notes the researcher.\n\nAt CIRCERB, Mr. Blanchet is working on creating a rigid insulation material made from cellulose filaments (recycled from newspapers) and glycerol (a by-product of biodiesel production). Cellulose fibers are also being used to design a weatherproof membrane by blending them with \u201cresins produced through green chemistry.\u201d This membrane could potentially replace synthetic, petrochemical-based ones like Tyvek.\n\n\u201cOur goal is to work within the spirit of a circular economy, using wood residues. Our society is built for square things, but a tree trunk is round!\u201d exclaims the researcher, noting that the industry produces 30% to 40% of \u201cco-products\u201d that can be recovered in this way.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Straw and mushrooms<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBeyond wood, research is also exploring the use of straw in construction. \u201cIt\u2019s still being used, but it\u2019s marginal\u2014there\u2019s a hill to climb. There were horror stories in Quebec in the 1970s that left a mark,\u201d says Pierre Blanchet.\n\n\u201cRot, vermin… straw has a bad reputation. You need to have faith\u201d to work with this material, says Normand Hudon, senior architect at Coarchitecture. He\u2019s currently working on an experimental building that incorporates straw.\n\n\u201cStraw offers very high thermal resistance at a low cost,\u201d says Mr. Hudon, who sees the potential for creating energy-autonomous buildings, perhaps even \u201ccarbon-negative\u201d ones.\n\nThe architect also points to the abundance of the resource in Quebec. However, \u201csince the stalk isn\u2019t edible, it doesn\u2019t get much value,\u201d which is exactly why integrating it into construction makes sense.\n\nAmong the innovative products being developed elsewhere, Pierre Blanchet mentions MycoBoard\u2014plywood panels made from wood and mycelium (the root structure or \u201cwhite part\u201d of mushrooms), designed in the United States. The mycelium replaces the synthetic adhesives typically found in panels currently on the market. \u201cIt\u2019s a material that might show up here in the future, much like straw.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A growing interest in hemp<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhile the use of hemp in construction is fairly widespread in Europe\u2014particularly in France and Belgium\u2014it\u2019s still relatively unknown in Quebec, according to F\u00e9lix Ladouceur of Nature Fibres.\n\nThe company, based in Asbestos and founded less than two years ago, produces hemp insulation panels mainly for the residential market.\n\n\u201cWe\u2019ve seen a nice increase in demand. At first, we sold directly to contractors, but now we work with distributors,\u201d says Mr. Ladouceur, head of business development at Nature Fibres. \u201cWe\u2019re in talks with major chains to get into hardware stores, but I can\u2019t say more just yet.\u201d\n\nAiming for high production volumes, Nature Fibres imports much of its raw material from France. \u201cHemp cultivation isn\u2019t developed enough in Quebec. We\u2019d need hundreds and hundreds of hectares just for us, while the province only produced around 2,000 hectares of hemp back in 2016,\u201d explains Mr. Ladouceur.\n\nThe company\u2019s hemp panels are more expensive than mainstream products like fiberglass or mineral wool but less expensive than expanded polystyrene. Beyond thermal resistance, hemp panels also provide excellent sound insulation and moisture control: \u201cthey can absorb up to 20% of their weight in water and release that moisture in very dry conditions,\u201d says F\u00e9lix Ladouceur.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Prefabricated homes<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

At Gabriel Construction Chanvre and Artcan<\/a>, located in Shefford in Mont\u00e9r\u00e9gie, a different process is used to build homes with this plant-based material. \u201cIt\u2019s a mix of hemp and lime, placed using wooden formwork to build solid walls,\u201d says Gabriel Gauthier, who learned the technique in France in the late \u201990s.<\/p>

These walls have a very natural, hand-crafted finish. \u201cMost people like the look as is, but it\u2019s also possible to add a natural paint if desired.\u201d<\/p>

Gauthier, who has completed around a hundred projects over the past 20 years (including renovations<\/a>), has only recently begun offering prefabricated homes<\/a> \u201cat relatively competitive prices.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s a niche product, but the niche is growing. There\u2019s more and more interest since we started offering prefabricated options,\u201d he notes.<\/p>

His hemp homes<\/a> are built on a wooden frame, usually with a metal roof (sometimes wood shingles), and most don\u2019t have a concrete basement. \u201cThe main advantage is comfort,\u201d says the specialized builder.<\/p>
